Craft It Up With Pin & Tack – Arts & Crafts Challenge #3

It’s February – WOWZERS! This year is moving quickly, but there’s always time to craft. So, let’s not waste a moment and get to the details . . .

{Anything Goes with Heart}

To join in the challenge, your craft must include a heart or the word “love.” Simple enough, right? Well, I hope so since Valentine’s Day is just around the corner 😉 This challenge ends on Friday, February 14th at 11:55 PM.

Click here to share your creativity and you could just win a prize while supporting animals.

Digital arts are welcome, too – Here is one I made using FREE papers from Jennifer Scraps.

Send Card Not Email . . . Golden Browns

Send Card Not Email . . . This is a special feature on Pin & Tack’s FB page. However, I wanted to share it here as well because I am a strong promoter of handmade arts & crafts.

There’s just something special about receiving a handmade card in the mail. This allows the recipient to hold the card in their two hands, see the details up close, and read a special handwritten note from you.

The next time you need to send a greeting, consider sending something made by an individual not a printing machine or a computer.

All of these handmade cards are available via Artfire. What’s Artfire? It’s similar to Etsy and hosts handmade artists and crafters’ shops. Another great source for all things handmade. You don’t need an account like Etsy, though, to shop. Take a look and you’re welcome to stop by Pin & Tack’s shop there, too!

Below are a few of the details . . .

To join in, create any arts &/or craft project with “sparkle.” Examples of sparkle include glitter, rhinestones, or shiny metal.

This challenge ends on Tuesday, January 14th at 11:59 PM PST. Winner will be announced no later than Saturday, January 18th.

Why, Oh Why . . . This Shop O’ Mine

First things first, my name is Corrinne Quinn. I am the sole person behind Pin & Tack, which is my handmade shop. It’s came from the fact that it features clothes pins & thumb tacks. If someone told me that I would be selling these things a few years back, I would have laughed.

It all began when I lost my job. There wasn’t a lot of prospects because the economy was bad & unemployment was high. I’d been scrapbooking for a couple years, but I’ve always been crafty. Thanks, Mom! When I discovered Etsy, I decided to create my own job. I was going to sell soap & cards. Easy enough.

Uh . . yeah. Uh . . no. Uh . . what else was I going to do?

I’m just a wee bit fiery about new projects, so I researched soap, bought the supplies, & started making it. It was so freaking cool! I made soap, bath salts, & bath bombs. With my own hands. With ingredients that I could read. With joy and love.

At the time, Etsy had Alchemy, which is how I got my first sale.

January 20, 2010: My first Etsy sale!

I was creating cards, craft supplies & soap. I was going to be the queen of soap. Oh, yes, I was. Crafters everywhere were going to use my supplies in their projects. People would be enjoying my cards gifted by others.

Well, people did. Somewhat. However, as with life in general, my path went different directions. I’m no longer selling soap, but I’m looking into starting again. Cards are more for challenges and sending to my niece, nephew & other family members.

I found my niche – the pins, peeps. Oh, those fabulous pins. And tacks. I’m blessed with and love it so much. Now, it’s changed even more as I work a “day” job, so this shop is about supporting other important matters rather than my rent, food & car insurance.

Pin & Tack will donate a portion of EACH sale to a charity or organization that does good work. This month, it’s Pigs Peace Sanctuary. I encourage you and yours to support it or another place that needs the help.

So, that’s a bit of the why. How about you: Got shop? Got charity? Let’s be social . . .

Why Work Of Our Hands Is Important

Imagine: Surviving on $2 a day. I can’t, but these women & their families do. Everyday. Now, that is a difficult life, but Valerie Garber decided to make a change by establishing Work Of Our Hands, a non-profit that teaches handmade craft skills to the unemployed in Nambia, Africa.

1. Give dignity & hope for the unemployed. When children are starving and there is no work, life can be depression,

2. Teach handcrafting and business skills.

3. Impart new life skills and new ways of thinking.

4. Establishing self-employment and independence.

To support Work Of Our Hands, pick up their handmade creations at their shop, African Whimsy. You can also discover more about the community at their blog.

This holiday, be thankful for what you have, share it and support those that don’t and continue to do so after the “season” ends. It’s what life should be about whether it’s Christmas or not!
